Srinagar- Six people were killed on Thursday when a cab ferrying them skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The tragic accident occurred on Thursday evening when the eco passenger vehicle (JK17-5089) skidded off the road and rolled down into the gorge near Nagriana in Kishtwar district, a police official said.
He said five people died on the spot while another injured succumbed on the way to the hospital.
The police official identified the deceased as Latief Ahmad Rather, Rehman Butt, Irfan Ahmad, Ghulam Hassan, Atta Mohammad and Zubair Ahmad, all residents of Nagriana.
He further said that a massive rescue operation was launched as soon as the information about the tragic accident was received.
Police have registered a case FIR N0 16/22 under section 279/304 IPC at the police station Kishtwar and started further investigations in this regard.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the road accident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
“Deeply anguished at the loss of precious lives in an unfortunate road accident in Keshwan, Kishtwar. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” the office of LG posted on its official Twitter handle.
Besides LG, several mainstream leaders, including former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar also expressed shock and grief over the death of six persons in the fatal road mishap.
While expressing grief over the accident, Dr Farooq said, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the fatal road accident. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. What is worrying here is the fact that there has been no initiative by the incumbent administration to curb the occurrence of such fatalities.”
Omar Abdullah while expressing grief over the deadly accident said, “I pray for peace to departed souls and speedy recovery to injured. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families.”
Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also expressed profound grief over the loss of precious lives.
In a statement issued here, Bukhari termed the hapless road accident as extremely unfortunate while raising concerns over the startling increase in the number of road accidents on high-altitude roads.
“The administration must ensure that the vehicle drivers strictly follow the requisite traffic schedules and guidelines in letter and spirit so that such heart-rending mishaps can be positively avoided,” he said.
Bukhari also demanded a thorough investigation with regards to the abnormal spike in such accidents that pose a great threat to the lives of commuters besides constituting special checking squads at these roads whose presence will further strengthen the necessary road safety.
