SRINAGAR: About 49 percent voters exercised their right to franchise in the fourth phase of Assembly Elections across 18 Assembly constituencies of four districts in the state including Srinagar, Anantnag, Shopian and Samba on Sunday.
Srinagar, which had been largely following the boycott call of separatists eversince massive poll rigging in 1987 plunged the state into turmoil, recorded the highest voter turn out of 28 percent this year.
In 2008, Srinagar district had recorded 21.07% turnout.
Addressing a press conference here, Chief Election Commissioner, Umang Narula said, in total of 1473050 registered voters for fourth phase of elections, 49% persons cast their ballot today.
He said that Sundays polls are 4% higher than that of 2008 polls. The percentage was 45% in 2008 in the areas which went to polls today and it remained at 29% in last held Lok Sabha elections in May this year, he said.
All the eight assembly constituencies crossed their 2008 poll mark and presently ruling National Conference is holding all the seats.
In South Kashmir, Anantnag district recorded 61% dropping 2% than its 2008 record of 63%. Shopian district remained at 50% equal to that of 2008 polls.
The CEO added that district Samba in Jammu recorded highest turnout of 81% with Samba constituency polling 77% and Vijaypur recording 81.31 % respectively.
