Shahzad Had Shot Dead 5 BJP Leaders And Workers, Inspector: Police
Srinagar- A Hizbul Mujahideen militant responsible for shooting dead a police officer and five BJP leaders and workers, including a Sarpanch and his wife, was killed in an early morning encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said Friday.
Police, army’s counter-insurgency 1RR and the personnel of CRPF 90 battalion launched a cordon and search operation in Mominhall Aarwani area of Bijbehara on Friday morning on the basis of specific information about the presence of a militant in the village, a police spokesperson said.
During the search operation, he said, as the presence of the trapped militant got ascertained, he was given ample opportunities to surrender.
“However, he denied the surrender opportunities and instead fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, the police spokesperson said, the holed-up militant Shahzad Ahmad Seh of Sehpora Kulgam was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter.
As per police records, he said, Shahzad was a categorized militant linked with Hizb and was part of groups involved in several “terror crime cases”.
Giving more details, he said, the killed Hizb militant assassinated Police Inspector Mohammad Ashraf Bhat at his residence in Chandpora, Kanelwan in Anantnag district last October. Ten days later, he said, Shahzad killed 3 BJP workers at YK-Pora Kulgam and in August this year, a BJP Sarpanch and his Wife at Lal-Chowk Anantnag.
“Besides, he was also involved in attack on DDC candidate Anees ul Islam Ganie at Sagam Kokernag on 04.12.2020 and in snatching weapon from a constable at Shamispora crossing in Khudwani area of Kulgam on 25.07.2021. Moreover, he was involved in various grenade lobbing incidents and attacks on security establishments in Anantnag and Kulgam areas,” the police spokesperson said.
He also claimed recovery of incriminating materials; arms & ammunition including 1 AK 47 Rifle, 2 AK Magazines, 40 AK rounds and a Grenade from the encounter site
“All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated,” he said.
The police spokesperson also urged people to cooperate with Police till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.
