Srinagar- Police on Thursday said it killed two local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba in an overnight firefight in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.
Police, army’s 1RR and the personnel of CRPF 18 battalion launched a cordon and cordon and search operation (CASO) in Redwani on Wednesday night on the basis of specific input regarding the presence of militants in the village, a police spokesperson said Thursday.
The search team, he said, offered holed-up militants repeated opportunities to surrender as and when their presence got ascertained.
“However they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, the police spokesperson said two LeT militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter. He identified the duo as Amir Bashir Dar of Frisal and Adil Yousuf Shan of Kulgam.
As per police records, he said, both the killed militants were categorized and were part of groups involved in several “terror crime cases” including attacks on security forces and civilian “atrocities”.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 02 Pistols, 02 magazines, 07 pistol rounds & 01 grenade were recovered from their possession. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
“Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitised and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
The police spokesperson also quoted IGP Kashmir lauding the role of police and security forces for evacuation of civilians especially during night hours, who were trapped inside cordon and for conducting successful operations without any collateral damage.
