Srinagar- Police have arrested a woman and her daughter on charges of raising ‘anti-national’ slogans in the aftermath of an encounter in which two militants were killed, officials said on Wednesday.
Afroza, wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi and their daughter Aisha were charged under Sections 147 and 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code and lodged at Women’s police station Rambagh here, they said.
Police had shot dead two militants at a marketplace in the high security Rangreth area of Srinagar on Monday.
Some residents, mostly women, staged a protest soon afterwards raising slogans against the government forces amidst claims that the gun battle was “staged”.
Several social media users have also questioned the authenticity of the encounter.
Police, late on Monday, issued an advisory on Twitter and warned the social media users against “aiding and abetting terrorism”.
“Beware Social Media users. #Aiding & #abetting of #terror is as grave as the actual act of terror. It is #punishable under UAPA,” the Kashmir Zonal police tweeted.
Arresting Women Marks A ‘New Low’: Mehbooba
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday slammed the arrest of a woman and her daughter.
Taking to Twitter, the former Chief Minister termed the arrest of the mother-daughter duo as a new low in Kashmir.
“Arresting women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration that persecutes civilians only to please their masters in Delhi. The situation is getting worse & instead of reaching out to the people, GOI is pushing them to the wall,” Mehbooba Tweeted.

Earlier in the day, police arrested Afroza and her daughter Aisha for allegedly chanting anti-national slogans in Rangreth area on Monday where government forces killed two Jaish militants in a ‘chance’ encounter.
