Awantipora- Department of Islamic Studies, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), held an online lecture on “Decolonization, Autonomous Knowledge and Sociology of Islam” organised under its ‘Monthly Online Lecture Series’.
The lecture was presided over by Registrar, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, who in his presidential remarks welcomed the expert and expressed his appreciation over these regular intellectual exchanges at the University that is helping students and scholars to imbibe new learnings. He congratulated the department for conducting such insightful programmes.
Professor of Sociology at National University of Singapore (NUS), Prof. Syed Farid Al-Atas, who was the invited speaker delivered a special lecture in which he deliberated upon the theme by highlighting the concept of decolonization vis-à-vis ‘eurocentrism’ and deliberated on the subject-object dichotomy characterizing the eurocentrism as a prominent ‘need for autonomous knowledge’ and the relationship with the broader paradigm of the ‘sociology of Islam.’
Earlier, Head, Department of Islamic Studies, Dr. Afroz Ahmad Bisati, introduced the theme of the lecture and delivered the welcome address.
The lecture was attended by research scholars, faculty members and students of the Department of Islamic Studies, with many participants from other universities within India and abroad, and was followed by a short question-answer session.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Riyaz Ahmad Sheikh and the session was moderated by Dr. Gowhar Quadir Wani, both faculty members at the Department of Islamic Studies.
