Srinagar: Police on Wednesday said it achieved a major success by killing Yasir Parray, an IED expert of Jaish-e-Mohammed group, and his Pakistani associate in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. In the meanwhile a traffic cop was shot at by unknown gunmen in Downtown Srinagar Wednesday evening.
Police, army’s 44RR and the personnel of CRPF 183Batatllion on Wednesday launched a joint cordon and search operation (CASO) in the Qasbayar area of the district on the basis of specific input about the presence of militants, a police spokesperson said.
During the search operation, he said, the holed-up militants were given an opportunity to surrender as soon as their presence got ascertained.
“However they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, the police spokesperson said, two militants of JeM were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
He identified the killed militants as Yasir Parray of Qasbayar, an IED expert and his associate Abu Furkan alias Ali Bhai, a resident of Pakistan.
“As per police records, both the killed terrorists were part of groups involved in planning and executing terror attacks on security establishments and civilian killings,” the police spokesperson said.
Parray, he said, figured among the list of most wanted militants operating in the valley as he was a highly trained IED expert. Besides other “terror crimes”,
Parray, he said, was also instrumental in motivating and recruiting the youth to join militant folds and other criminal activities.
The police spokesperson further said that Parray was also involved in carrying out an IED attack at Arihal in which two soldiers of army’s 2RR were killed and 17 others injured.
“He was also involved in an attack on Police Naka at Prichoo Pulwama in which HC Anoop Singh of IRP 10th Bn attained martyred and injuries to other police personnel. He was also involved in barring people from participating in democratic activities, besides issuing death threats to DDCs, BDCs, Panchs, Sarpanchs, other political workers and police personnel,” he added.
Giving more details of the killed militants, the police spokesperson said that Abu Furkan was active in Kashmir valley since 2018 figuring among the list of top 60 militants and used to operate in Pulwama and Pakharpora area of Budgam.
“He was involved in various terrorist activities, recruitment of local youth into JeM terror folds and mentoring active terrorists of JeM. He was responsible for providing capabilities on fabrication of IEDs,” he said.
“Moreover, he along with terrorist Yasir Parray were the main conspirators of Avandgund Rajpora VB-IED in which 50Kg IED laden Santro Vehicle was recovered and defused by Police and security forces. They were also involved in killing of a civilian Azad Ahmad Dar resident of Kangan Pulwama,” he added.
The police spokesperson claimed recovery of incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 2 AK-series rifles, 2 pistols from the site of encounter.
“All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation. Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated,” he added.
Traffic Cop Shot At In Rajouri Kadal
In the evening a traffic policeman was attacked and injured by suspected militants in Rajouri Kadal area of the Old City here, officials said.
The traffic cop identified as Muhammad Abdullah was regulating traffic along the busy crossing in Rajouri Kadal area when suspected pistol-borne militants fired upon him, officials said. Abdullah, they said, received bullet injuries in the surprise attack.
The injured traffic cop was removed to SMHS hospital for treatment. According to the reports, Abdullah is a resident of Kangan in Ganderbal district.
“Terrorists fired upon & #injured a traffic police personnel who was busy in regulating traffic at Rajouri Kadal, #Srinagar. He has been shifted to hospital. Area has been #cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” police posted on its official Twitter handle.
Soon after the attack, police and CRPF reached the spot and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
