Srinagar- The militant commander Mehran Yasin Shalla’s name had come up during a recent security review meeting which was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Srinagar, well placed sources said on Thursday.
UNI quoting these sources reported that when Home Minister Shah inquired about the spate of targeted minority killings during the October 23 meeting at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar, top officials named TRFs (The Resistance Front) Mehran as a “main accused”. It is learnt that Shah at that very moment told top security officials “to take immediate steps to eliminate the top commander”.
Mehran, a resident of Jamalatta in the old city was killed after a shootout along with two of his associates- Manzoor Ahmad Mir and Arafat Ahmad Sheikh, both residents of south Kashmir’s Pulwama- at Rambagh Srinagar on Wednesday evening. Eyewitnesses who spoke to reporters at the spot contested the police claim about the encounter.
Police said Mehran was behind most of the killings in Srinagar, including that of a school Principal Supinder Kour, teacher Deepak Chand and probationary J&K Police Sub Inspector Arshid Ahmad Mir.
Mehran had joined militancy in June this year and immediately came under the security radar.
A senior police officer said his killing is a major setback to the militant network in Srinagar.
“We are hopeful that the killing of the TRF commander would reduce militant activities especially in Srinagar,” he said.
