Ganderbal: A day after authorities said a female student of the Central University of Kashmir likely died of suffocation at a rented accommodation, several students of the institute staged a demonstration to press the authorities into providing hostel facilities.
The students complained that hostel facilities were not provided after the shifting of the varsity to Ganderbal district.
The students alleged that they have approached the CUK administration several times but to no avail.
“We come from far-flung areas of Kashmir and the university does not provide us the hostel facilities, so we have been forced to stay in the rented rooms outside the university,” a protesting student said.
Spokesperson CUK students union Nadia Rashid said it was the responsibility of the university to accommodate students in hostels and provide them safe accommodation.
“That is out rightly being denied by our university,” said Nadia. “We are suffering at every nook and nothing is being done to assimilate us.”
On Sunday, two female students identified as Shabnaz and Ziyaan, both from the Poonch district, were found unconscious in their rented accommodation at Saloora, Ganderbal.
Both were later shifted to the District Hospital Ganderbal where Shabnaz was declared dead by the doctors while Ziyaan was admitted to the SKIMS in Srinagar for further treatment.
