Srinagar: In the second killing in less than 24 hours, suspected militants on Monday shot dead a salesman in the Old City here.
45-year-old salesman Ghulam Mohammad Khan was fired upon by suspected militants in the Bohri Kadal area of the Old City here on Monday evening, officials said. A resident of Ashtangoo in Bandipora district, Khan received multiple gunshot wounds in his left side of chest and abdomen.
He was removed to the nearby SMHS hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries before the doctors could operate upon him.
According to the reports, Khan was working as a salesman for over a decade with a Kashmiri Pandit trader Dr Sandeep Mawah. Originally hailing from downtown Srinagar, Khan is married to lone daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Brag, a resident of Ashtangoo Bandipora
Khan, according to the reports, was seated inside Sandeep’s car and was taking the vehicle to his residence when unknown gunmen appeared near the window and shot him from point blank range. Sandeep, who is under police protection, had reportedly left his shop when his employee was fired upon.
Khan’s killing comes less than 24 hours after a policeman Tawseef Ahmad Wani was shot dead outside his home in SD Colony, Batamaloo on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, a police spokesperson in a statement issued here said that preliminary investigations have revealed that “terrorists” fired upon the civilian Mohammad Ibrahim Khan son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan around 8:10 pm Monday.
“In this terror incident, he had sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries,” the police spokesperson said.
He said that police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and investigation is in progress to establish the circumstances which lead to this “terror crime”.
“Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on,” he added.
Meanwhile, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah condemned the killing of the civilian.
“The dastardly killing of Ibrahim is reprehensible & I unreservedly condemn it. Unfortunately Ibrahim is the latest in a series of targeted killings in the valley, especially Srinagar. May Allah grant him place in Jannat,” Omar tweeted.
Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also expressed deep shock and grief over the killing.
While terming the incident as extremely heart-rending, Bukhari said that there appears to be no respite for the people from the vicious bloodshed in the valley.
“Regrettably another day has to end with a mournful incident. A salesman who would have been working hard to earn bread and butter for his family has been mercilessly killed by unknown gunmen. No words of solace can ever suffice to alleviate the grief of his family. The valley appears to be engulfed in a blight of violence which must come to end once for all. The plots of forces inimical to peace can never succeed to instill fear and chaos among the people. The law should take its course and nab these perpetrators,” he said, as per a party spokesperson
Pertinently, 20 militants, 12 soldiers and 13 civilians were killed in different militancy related incidents, including encounters and targeted killings in last month.
The killing of 13 civilians in October, most of them non-locals, is the highest death toll in the last two years and the fourth-highest since 2012.
The spate of targeted killings, mostly of non-locals, led to exodus of hundreds of migrant labourers and their families hailing from north India’s Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar states. The killing also prompted the security agencies to beef up security apparatus across the Valley.
In the last month also, 12 soldiers, including two junior commissioned officers (JCOs) were also killed in one of the longest and biggest search operations in border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, where according to police an under-trial militant Zia Mustafa was also killed in militant firing.
The month of October also proved more deadly for militants.
The army, police and CRPF in joint operations killed 20 militants of various outfits in Srinagar, Shopian, Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Bandipora and Pulwama districts.
