Srinagar: Coronavirus cases continue to shoot up in Jammu and Kashmir as 165 more people tested positive for virus on Sunday, even as no fresh fatality was reported from the Union territory during the last 24 hours.
According to the officials, 156 new cases of Covid-19 were reported from Kashmir and nine from Jammu division, taking the number of people infected since the outbreak of pandemic last year in J&K to 33076.
Giving district-wise breakup of positive cases, the officials said that Srinagar reported highest 87 cases, Baramulla 26, Bandipora and Ganderbal 13 each, Budgam 9, Pulwama and Kupwara three each and one new case each in Anantnag and Kulgam districts. Shopian was the only district in the Valley where no fresh case was reported on Sunday.
In the winter capital, officials said, Jammu reported a maximum of four cases, Doda two, and one new case each was detected from Kathua, Poonch and Reasi districts. Udhampur, Rajouri, Samba, Kishtwar and Ramban reported no fresh cases.
“Moreover, 103 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and been discharged from various hospitals including 05from Jammu Division and 98 from Kashmir Division,” they said.
The officials also said that no new case of Mucormycosis has been reported today.
Also, the officials said that the death toll remained 4440 in J&K —2177 in Jammu division and 2263in Kashmir division, as no fatality was reported on Sunday.
The spike in daily positive cases in the Valley, half of them from Srinagar, have prompted the district administration here to declare more and more areas as micro-containment zones.
On Saturday, the district administration warned of localised lockdown in some areas besides strict action against the people violating the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
DC Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, who carried out a whirlwind tour of marketplaces, also said that Srinagar could be the reason behind the start of the third wave in J&K, if people don’t follow Covid-19 Safety Protocols, then
“Next two weeks are very critical for us as this period would decide if cases increase or decrease. If we start care from today, definitely cases would reduce,” he had said.
