Leh- After years of lobbying for separation from “Muslim Kashmir” and Union Territory status, the Ladakh Buddhist Association has now endorsed the demand for special protections for the region.
In a general council meeting on Sunday, the rightwing Buddhist body’s president endorsed the Ladakh Apex Body of People’s Movement’s demand for statehood and extension of constitutional safeguards under the Indian Constitution’s 6th Schedule.
Ladakh, formerly part of the Jammu and Kashmir state, enjoyed the same special status and constitutional safeguards under the Article 370 as the rest of the state before it was carved out as a union territory.
A statement issued by the body stated that its president “exhorted” the public to “extend complete support for the LBA’s decision to usher Ladakh’s future into a state of certainty, security and appropriate development.”
“The participating members endorsed Mr. President’s logical developments that lead to the decisions by giving huge round of applause and approval,” the association said.
The body, however, did not explain the reasons behind its sudden dissatisfaction with Ladakh’s Union Territory status, incidentally a decades-old demand propagated by the outfit itself.
