Srinagar: A gunfight broke out on Thursday between militants and government forces in Chanpora area of this capital city.
According to the officials, police and CRPF launched a search operation in Rose Lane locality of Chanpora area of the city on Saturday evening on the basis of inputs suggesting presence of two militants in the area. When the joint team zeroed in towards the suspected spot, the militants hiding in the area opened fire upon them.
The joint team, reports said, returned the fire settings off an encounter. The exchange of gunfire continued for several minutes before the guns fell silent.
“It looks like the militants had managed to escape from the cordoned area using the dense dark as cover,” a Police official told Kashmir Observer.
The outbreak of the encounter, reports said, created panic in the congested locality and prompted the residents to stay indoors. The traders also downed their shutters and ran towards safer places.
