Srinagar: Suspected militants on Sunday shot dead two more non-local labourers and injured another in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, a day after two residents of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were shot dead in Srinagar and Pulwama districts under similar circumstances.
According to police, militants opened fire upon a group of three non-locals in Wanpoh area of the district on Sunday evening, leaving two of them dead on the spot and one critically injured.
The deceased have been identified as Raja Reshi Dev and Jogindar Reshi Dev, both natives of Bihar. The critically injured man identified as Chun Reshi Das son of Teju Das of Bihar, was taken to GMC Anantnag where his condition is stated to be stable.
“He has a firearm injury in back and arm. His condition is stated to be stable,” Medical Superintendent GMC Anantnag Dr Iqbal Sofi said.
The attack on the trio from Bihar comes a day after suspected militants shot in the head 30-year-old Arvind Kumar Sah, a street vendor from Banka in Bihar, in Eidgah area of the Old City here on Saturday evening. Barely an hour later, Saghir Ahmad, a carpenter hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead in Pulwama district.
With the death of two more Bihar natives on Sunday, the total number of civilians killed since last week has gone up to 11.
The targeted killing of civilians has sent the security agencies in a tizzy. Several rumours were doing rounds on social media that the Kashmir Police chief and SSP Srinagar are likely to be transferred. However, there was no such official confirmation.
Sources from J&K police told Kashmir Observer that the entire security establishment was on the job to “break the chain” of targeted killings.
Amid the killings, an advisory from the J&K Police asking all district chiefs to gather non-resident labourers and bring them to the nearest security camps immediately, went viral on social media.
However, the order was refuted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar terming it as “totally baseless and fake order”.
“There is no such order. It’s a fake one,” the IGP Kashmir told a local news agency.
However, many reports are coming from South and Central Kashmir that non-locals are being evacuated to safer places by J&K police and CRPF while others are planning to leave Kashmir.
There are estimated three to five lakh labourers from different Indian states working and earning their living in Kashmir.

The security forces have also intensified anti-militancy operations. According to the police, 13 “terrorists” have been killed over the past one week.
“13 militants have been killed in nine encounters after civilian killings. We have killed three out of five terrorists in Srinagar in less than 24 hours,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar has said.
