Srinagar- Two militants were killed and a policeman injured in twin encounters in Anantnag and Bandipora districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Monday.
According to a police spokesperson, one unidentified militant was killed and a policeman sustained injuries in a chance encounter that broke out in the process of arresting a militant associate Javed Ahmad Bhat of Khahgund Dooru. He said that the identification and affiliation of the killed militant was being ascertained.
“While the said police party were laying cordon around the house, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately upon the police party which was retaliated. In this chance encounter, one police personnel was injured while one unidentified terrorist was also killed,” he said.
The injured police personnel, he said, has been evacuated to hospital for treatment where his condition is stated to be stable.
In a separate encounter in Bandipora district, the police spokesperson said that a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was killed.
In the wee hours of Monday, he said, Police, army’s 13RR and the personnel of 47Bn CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation in Gund Jahangir on the basis of specific input about the presence of militants in the village.
“During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists got ascertained they were given the opportunity to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” the police spokesperson said.
In the ensuing encounter, he said, Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar of LeT (TRF) was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter.
Dar, as per the official spokesperson was the main accused in killing of a sumo driver Mohammad Shafi alias Sonu at Shahgund.
“He joined terror folds after the Police unearthed the module involved in planning and executing the said killing and the other involved terror associates have already been arrested,” he added.
The police spokesperson quoted IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar congratulating the joint teams of Police and security forces for conducting successful operations especially to Bandipora Police for conducting operations which resulted in elimination of the “terrorist” involved in recent Shahgund civilian killing.
“Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from both the encounter sites. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
“Police have registered cases under relevant sections of law and investigations have been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the areas at both encounter sites are completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
3 Militants Trapped In Shopian
A report from South Kashmir said at least three unidentified militants are believed to be trapped in an encounter that broke out in Tulran area of Shopian district on Monday.
According to reports, Police, Army’s 34RR and CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation in Tulran on the basis of information suggesting the presence of militants in the area. When the joint team started advances, reports said, the militants hiding in the village opened fire upon them in a bid to escape from their dragnet.
The joint team, reports said, returned the fire setting off a fierce encounter.
A video purportedly showing a senior police officer asking militants to surrender went viral on social networking websites. The police officer in the video asks the three unknown militants to lay down their arms so that they can lead a peaceful life.
