Police Says Paramilitary Men Fired In Self Defense As Vehicle Jumped Naka
Srinagar: The paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on Thursday shot dead a man in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district after he allegedly jumped a checkpoint.
Unconfirmed reports identified the deceased as Yasir Ali from Jhajjar Kotli in Jammu division.
According to the reports, the personnel of CRPF 40 Battalion had erected a checkpoint at Monghall Bridge on Thursday evening, where vehicles were being screened. In the meantime, reports said, a silver colour Scorpio was approaching the checkpoint and was signalled to stop.
However, the car allegedly ignored the signal and jumped the checkpoint following which CRPF men fired upon it. In the action, one person was killed.
In a statement issued late night, a police spokesperson said that CRPF personnel fired in self defense leading to killing of a person in Anantnag district.
“A Naka was established by 40 Bn CRPF at Monghal Bridge .A suspected vehicle without number was tried to intercept by the Naka party,” reads a police statement.
“However it rushed towards the Naka party. It was then challenged by the on duty troops. Troops fired upon in self defence and one person died. But driver managed to escape,” the handout read
Police said that the identity and credential of the deceased person is being verified.
