EVER since the lockdown has been lifted and offices have resumed functioning with sufficient attendance, traffic on the streets has also escalated. However, this time around it is just too much for everyone to tolerate.
Roads in Srinagar have serpentine blockades and diversion. It really would take one a lot of philosophy to explain these sudden inexplicable shifts and stops. While it is a random construction in the middle of the road or just a authoritarian road block which forces you to take a different route; it is an affair that bothers and baffles!
Add to this the ever impatient nature of drivers here. It is too hard for those with two-wheelers to ever consider not getting into every breathing space — god forbid they don’t feel the triumph that comes with the convenience of having a two Wheeler in traffic.
On the other side, there are the swanky drivers who have all the pride to derive out of showing all other foolish rule followers that they’ve got it in them to cross the line of vehicles and go ahead of many. What they do with this achievement is unknown given that this adventure of theirs ends up jeopardises the possibility of traffic opening up.
Then there are the street vendors. I have nothing against them as long as their stalls don’t keep increasing and taking up most space of the roads. Suddenly, many fruit vendors have opened up stages for their fruits instead of the smaller stalls. This creates yet another nuisance.
Yet another baffling sight are the newly installed street lights. They twinkle with so many signals that it would put an adolescent’s existential dilemma to shame! Truly, they make one wonder at the purpose-lessness of life with arrows going in all directions.
Hope these nuisances are reduced so every one of us can have a pleasant commute experience.
