- Traditional Ashura procession in Srinagar disallowed again

Srinagar: Yaum-e-Ashura, the 10th day of the month of Muharram was observed across Kashmir on Thursday with majalis and processions commemorating the supreme sacrtifice of Syedna Imam Hussain and other members of the noble family of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) on this day in 680 CE in the plains of Karbala.
Mourners carried out processions in Srinagar, Budgam and other districts that culminated peacefully.
However, authorities again disallowed the traditional procession of Ashura banned since 1990. The procession used to commence from Abi Guzar in the civil lines and culminate in the evening also known as Sham-e-Ghariban at Zadibal in downtown Srinagar.
Mourners were allowed to carry out processions in interior parts of Srinagar district. Members from the Sunni community were seen offering refreshments to the mourners at different places reviving the age-old bond between the two communities.
A massive Zuljinah procession was carried out from Alipur-Bota Kadal and it culminated at the Imambara Zadibal in the late hours of Thursday. Entire stretch was crammed with the black clad mourners waving Islamic flags.
A large procession was also taken out in Bemina quarter in the city outskirts.
Similarly, Ashura processions were also carried out across Budgam district.
The second major procession was taken out from Mirgund which ended at the Imambara Budgam.
A large procession was also taken from Magam which culminated at Imambara Ahmadpora.
Pattan, Delina and Hygam areas of Baramulla district also witnessed big processions. In Anantnag Zuljinah processions were taken out from Wularhama Pahalgam, Sofi Pora and Chattergul.
Similar processions were carried out in Pulwama and Kulgam districts.
Later Majalis-e-Shami Ghaiban were held at Astana Syed Hassan Nabdipora and Imambargah Zadibal where speakers recounted the horrors womenfolk of the Prophets household faced on the night following the battle of Karbala.
Moreover, the Sunni Muslims also organized Ijtimas on the occasion in local Masjids here, during which the religious clerics delivered speeches and threw light on the tragedy of Karbala.
