SRINAGAR: Pampore township observed a complete shutdown on Monday to commemorate the sixth death anniversary of Peoples League Shiekh Abdul Aziz.
Eyewitnesses said that all the shops, business establishments and schools remained closed in the Saffron town, while there was partial movement of traffic on the roads.
Large contingent of police and Para-military troopers had been deployed to thwart possible protest march. Reports said that police had sealed some important points, however, people were allowed to visit the residence of slain leader and according to reports hundreds of people visited Martyrs Grave yard located at Drangabal Panpore to offer tribute to the deceased.
In view of Sheikh Abdul Azizs sixth Martyrdom anniversary, All Parties Hurriyat Conference held a seminar at Rajbagh which was presided by APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Dr Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq.
Hurriyat G chairman Syed Ali Geelani was not allowed to come out from his Hyderpora residence while other leaders of the organization and Hurriyat Conference JK visited Mazar-i-Shohdah Idgah Srinagar where they paid tribute to the martyrs of Kashmir. Those who visited the Idgah grave yard included Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Altaf Ahmed, Mehraj-u-Din Kalwal and others.
Shiekh Abdul Aziz who hailed from Pampore was killed on August 11, 2008, at Tchal Uri when he was leading a procession towards Pakistan Administered Kashmir to protest against the economic blockade of Valley by rightwing Hindu activists in Jammu.
