Srinagar: Holding gun-culture responsible for the death and destruction in Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday advised them to adopt peaceful means to register their protest.
Militants should shun the path of violence and instead choose other ways to register their protest and to fight for their rights, he said.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating a building complex of Lal Ded hospital here, Omar said the gun-culture has been ruining the state for the past 25 years and that the militants should find a different way to fight for their rights.
He added that people especially youth have understood the end result of the gun-culture and they are not getting inclined towards this culture now. Gun-culture has brought only death and destruction and nothing else and those who join militant ranks should understand it will fetch them nothing expect ruin their careers, Omar said.
Replying to a question, Omar said that National Conference would soon come with the third list of candidates. We have already issued two lists of candidates and at opportune time our party will declare the name of candidates who will contest elections on behalf of the party, he said.
Responding to a query about the row over UPSC exam, Omar said that the row needs to be resolved and noted that it would be “unfair” to “impose” a particular language on a diverse population.
“It is an issue that needs resolution. It is an issue that has raised passions particularly among those people who are not comfortable with English as a first language. In a country as diverse as ours, we cannot force one language on the entire population,” he said adding that d it would be “extremely unfair” to “foist” a language on a region like Jammu and Kashmir.
“Take Jammu and Kashmir for an example. We are a state with three diverse regions. Our official languages are Urdu and English. To impose a language on us would be extremely unfair,” he said.
Omar welcomed the Centre’s announcement of convening an all-party meet over the issue. “Obviously, we have a point of view. The fact that an all-party meeting has been called, which means that the National Conference will be represented. We will put our point of view across,” he said.
