Jawan’s safe return assured; handover likely today
SRINAGAR: Pakistan Wednesday detained a Border Security Force jawan who was washed away into Pakistani territory after a boat capsize in Chenab near Akhnoor sector of the working Indo-Pak border, officials said. They added that the Pakistani authorities during an emergency flag meeting have assured that the detained jawan would be safely returned
“It’s true. We were patrolling the surging Chenab river near Akhnoor sector of the border when constable Satiyasheel Yadaw from Uttar Pradesh got washed away by the speedy river,” Inspector General of Indian Border Security Froce, S S Tomar told Kashmir Observer. He said Pakistan’s Chenab rangers had informed the BSF officials and soon a flag meet was conducted in at the border. “Pakistani authorities warmly agreed to return our soldier in a safe manner. The borders remain tense during night so the handover of the jawan will take place in day light on Thursday. We don’t expect any stand off over this,” Mr. Tomar said.
Earlier the Pakistani authorities had told local media that they arrested an Indian Border Security Force soldier for crossing the working border into Pakistani territory near Kuleil village in Sialkots Bajwat sector on Wednesday.
Quoting intelligence sources, Pakistani TV channels reported that an Indian soldier was taken into custody by Chenab Rangers and he was later shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
Cross-border clashes between Pakistan and India in 2013 had soured relations between the two countries but the severity of these encounters has reduced for past many months.
