Jammu: Five persons were killed and five others were injured when a taxi cab they were travelling in skidded off the road and rolled down into over 1000-ft gorge in Ramban district on Friday, officials said.
They said that at around 1640 hours, a Sumo vehicle (JK03E-3218) on way from Neel to Tata Pani Sangaldan skidded off the thoroughfare and rolled down into the gorge at Digdol area in the district, reported news agency GNS.
Five persons died on the spot and five others were injured, the officials said. The injured have been shifted to district hospital Ramban for treatment.
SHO Ramban Pardeep Kumar confirmed the accident. He said that soon after information was received, a massive rescue operation was launched. Five persons died on the spot and five injured persons were removed to the hospital, he added.
Meanwhile, taking to Twitter to condole the lives lost in the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir.”
He also wished for a speedy recovery of the injured people.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
“Saddened by the loss of precious human lives in a road accident in Ramban. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured,” office the LG tweeted.
