SRINAGAR: Police on Saturday said that it arrested three cops, including a head constable, for their alleged involvement in an extortion case.
Police sources said, three cops, including a head constable Jalal-u-Din, constable Showkat Ahmad and constable Imtiyaz Ahmad posted at police station Nageen intercepted a businessman Tassaduq Hussain Dar son of Safdar Ali Dar of Budgam near Tourist Reception Centre and asked him to board the Police Gypsy they were travelling in. Dar had withdrawn Rs 6 lakhs cash from a bank and was carrying the money bag with him, they said.
Dar, according to the sources, was forced by the men in uniform to handover the bag to them.
Initially Dar resisted the pressure but he later gave in and handed over the bag to the erring cops, they said, adding that after snatching the bag accused asked Dar to get down from the Gypsy and threatened him of dire consequences if he opened his mouth or approached the police.
Sources said that Dar immediately rushed to Rambagh police station file a complaint but the police at Rambagh refused to register the complaint citing jurisdictional problem. The victim businessman later approached Kothi Bagh police station with an application mentioning some cell-phone numbers.
Sources said that in a swift action on the application the Kothi Bagh police traced the mobile numbers which pointed towards the three cops of Nigeen police station.
The Kothi Bagh police constituted a team of police personnel that raided the Nigeen police station and arrested the three cops who are presently lodged in Kothi Bagh police station.
The Kothi Bagh police have prepared a report and have sought further directions from the SSP Srinagar.
A top police officer said that police are trying its best to recover the money and an FIR against these three cops will be registered soon after.
