Srinagar: As coronavirus cases continue to show a significant decline in the Union Territory, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir has reported first confirmed case of “Delta Plus variant”.
An official said that sample collected at Katra and sent for genome sequencing to National Central for Disease Control (NCDC) returned positive for the Delta Plus variant.
Principal GMC Jammu, Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Shashi Sudan Sharma said that one sample from Katra has been confirmed to be Delta Plus variant. However she said sample has not gone from GMC.
The development came even as the second wave of the pandemic is waning in J&K and restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the infection are being eased.
So far around 40 cases of the Delta plus variant, classified as a variant of concern (VOC), have been detected in India.
According to some reports, the highly infectious Delta variant (B.1.617.2) of COVID -19 that was first found in India is feared to have mutated into Delta Plus variant.
J&K Logs 444 New Covid-19 Cases, 4 Deaths
Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir reported 444 new covid-19 cases while four more people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said on Wednesday.
They said 138 of fresh cases were reported from Jammu Division and 306 from Kashmir Valley, taking the total count to 313028.
Regarding deaths, the officials said that two each were reported from Jammu Division and Kashmir respectively, taking the fatality count 4273.
Providing the district-wide details, the officials said that Srinagar reported 98 cases, Baramulla 34, Budgam 40, Pulwama 40, Kupwara 25, Anantnag 40, Bandipora 17, Ganderbal 19, Kulgam 11, Shopian 3, Jammu 20, Udhampur 9, Rajouri 23, Doda 25, Kathua 6, Samba 3, Kishtwar 9, Poonch 17, Ramban 8 and Reasi 18.
Moreover, they said, 839 more patients have recovered in the last 24 hours—250 from Jammu Division and 589 from Kashmir. 301973 patients have recovered so far, leaving active cases at 6782—2505 in Jammu and 4277 in Kashmir.
One new confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) has been reported today, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 26 in J&K.
