Srinagar: Frustrated at being confined to a security zone, a recently elected Block Development Council (BDC) member made a bid to end his life on Tuesday.
Police has filed a case against the BDC member for attempting suicide at a hotel in high security zone Humhama area of Budgam district. He now faces imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with fine, or both.
The BDC member Ashaq Hussain Hurrah of Apni Party allegedly tried to commit suicide at a hotel in Humhama during the intervening night of June 21/22 after he was allegedly barred from meeting his family, reports said. A resident of Khore, Sheer Abad area of Pattan in North Kashmir, Hurrah has been booked under section 309 IPC by police in Budgam district.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, Hurrah said that he attempted to end his life out of frustration for not being allowed to move freely. However, he quickly added that he was allowed to go home after he tried to end his life.
“From last two years, I have been detained in a hotel in Budgam as the officials maintain we have some threat,” he said.
He further claimed that 30 other members have also been detained with him at a hotel in Humhama for the last two years.
He said, over three hotels have been booked for the “public representatives” who are living a “prisoners’ life” since two years.
“We are allowed to go home once a week. Then we have to report to the hotel, where we sit idle day and night,” he said.
“Our job has been reduced to mere hoisting flags on special occasions. Rest we have nothing to do, neither we are allowed to meet anyone,” he added.
The BDC member also alleged that the block development office doesn’t need them as they are not called to the office.
