Srinagar: Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said on Monday that there were a “good number” of foreign militants in the Valley but were “lying low” and “keeping a distance”.
Addressing a joint news conference at the Police Control Room (PCR) here with GOC Kilo Force, HS Sahi, the police chief said that only two foreign militants have been killed in twin gunfights this year.
“Both were killed in Sopore, including one on Monday and it clearly indicates that foreign militants are present here,” Singh said, adding “We have their details, according to which our operations are launched,”
The DGP said a strict check on infiltration and the understanding on the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan have had a positive impact on the situation in the valley.
He said that the infiltration has been strictly kept under check this year. The understanding at a high level on the ceasefire pact between the Indian and Pakistani armies has had a positive impact and we welcome that.
“But it would be wrong to claim that there are no foreign militants. They are here in good numbers and our operations will target them in the coming days,” he said.
He said that the militants killed in an overnight gunfight were involved in a number of activities including the recent attack on two policemen in Sopore town.
“One of the most wanted militants, Mudasir Pandit, a Pakistani militant Abdullah, alias Asrar and Khursheed Mir were among the three militants killed in an overnight encounter with forces in Sopore,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, GOC Kilo Force, HS Sahi said that the foreign militants have networked with the local militants in Kashmir and they operate together. He said that the militants receive local support and appealed the people to stop supporting these networks so that “innocent” people do not get killed.
Sahi said that the aim of security agencies is to break and destroy the “nexus” of local and foreign militants so that there is no hindrance in peace and development in the region.
He also sought the help of local populace and civil society to “destroy the existing system, and by stopping youngsters from joining the militant ranks”. He said it will help eradicate the militancy.
He also asked the local militants to surrender and warned them of meeting the same fate as the three militants killed in a gunfight in Sopore on Monday.
