Srinagar- Wildlife authorities on Friday captured a leopard from Khansahib area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday.
Official sources said the big cat was captured at Kalshipora Khansahib area of the district early morning by a team of wildlife department. The leopard was seen some time ago in the area and since then the department had increased surveillance, an official of the department said. “At around 6 a.m. this morning, the leopard weighing 60 kgs was caught and tranquilized,” the official said, adding, “It is being shifted to Dachigam where veterinarians concerned will examine the animal.”
It is the second leopard caught in the Khansahib area in less than two weeks.
Earlier on June 5, a leopard was trapped from Khudpora Village of the Khansahib. Also, a leopardess suspected to be the one which killed a 4-year-old minor girl at Ompora was caught in the premises of DC office Budgam earlier this week.
Meanwhile, a black bear, which had created panic among several residential areas in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district for nearly a fortnight now, was captured in wee hours on Friday.
Officials from Wildlife Department said that they had received complaints of frequent movement of a black bear in Zachaldara and its adjacent hamlets in Rajwar area. A cage was installed three days before in the area and the beast was trapped in it around 4:00 AM, they said.
The bear is being ferried to Dachigam Park, they further said.
The local inhabitants in the meantime hailed the efforts of the department concerned for its action to trap the bear, saying that the beast had during last two weeks caused damage to livestock besides wrecking havoc to the orchards and standing crops even as posing an imminent threat to human lives particularly in and around Zachaldara area.
