London: An armed man reportedly fired at Czech President, Vaclav Klaus, with a plastic replica of a pistol at close range while he was openinga bridge in the north of the country.
Footage of the incident shows Klaus recoiling slightly but carrying on with the visit apparently unhurt. He was taken to hospital but suffered only a minor bruise.
The attacker, who was dressed in camouflaged clothing, pushed his way through a crowd in the town of Chrastava before firing the weapon at Klaus, which was of the sort that is usually common in “airsoft” gaming, the BBC reports.
According to the report, the man was reported as a 26-year-old ‘communist sympathiser’ and was arrested by police shortly after the incident took place.
He said that he had carried out the attack because the government was deaf to the concerns of ordinary people.
Klaus’ security detail has come under harsh criticism for allowing the man to get so close to him, while he himself has allegedly rebuked his bodyguards for failing to handle the situation, the report said.
He later said the incident happened so quickly he did not have time to be afraid, it added.
