Gusty Windstorm Blows Away Rooftops, Uproots Trees
Srinagar: Kashmir Valley received light rainfall on Friday giving some respite to the residents who were reeling under intense heat wave conditions from the past few days.
The rainfall started in the Valley on Friday evening, dipping the mercury by a few notches and bringing much sought relief to the people from the scorching sun, officials said. Srinagar, the capital city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.0 degrees Celsius, seven notches less than the temperature recorded on Thursday.
As per the data available on meteorological department, Srinagar has recorded the hottest June day ever on the 29th day of the month in 1978 when mercury touched 37.8 degrees Celsius.
There was also respite from heat wave in Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, as it recorded a maximum of 37.3 degrees Celsius against previous day’s 41.9 degrees Celsius. With rainfall overnight, the temperature in Jammu was around two degrees less than the normal for this time of the year there, the official said.
Meanwhile, Qazigund recorded 33.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 30 degrees Celsius while Kokernag witnessed 32.3 degrees Celsius, more than previous day’s temperature there, the official said.
The border town Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 34.5 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in Kashmir.
Famous skiing and tourist resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a maximum of 23.5 degrees Celsius, the official added.
The weather office has forecast light to moderate thunderstorms with rain for next few days.
Regarding Ladakh, the officials said that the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy. “No forecast of any significant weather in the coming days,” he added.
Meanwhile, gusty windstorm blew away rooftops of several houses, uprooted trees, damaged vehicles and disrupted electricity supply in several parts of the Valley. The scary videos of the windstorm showing rooftops being blown away in Pulwama and Srinagar went viral on social networking websites Facebook and Twitter.
According to reports, several structures, including residential houses and vehicles were damaged in Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir.
Similar reports were also received from Baramulla and Budgam districts. In Pattan, many cars were damaged after the trees fell on them.
