Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police has decided to impose strictest curfew in the Valley, especially this capital city on Friday as it’s the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Peoples Conference founder Abdul Ghani Lone.
According to sources, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar on Thursday held deliberations with all DIsG and SSsP through virtual mode to take stock of the situation.
“It was decided that Police shall enforce the strictest corona curfew tomorrow (May 21),” they said.
Across India, May 21 is observed as anti-terrorism day. “The IGP instructed all field officers to remain alert and take preventive measures in view of anti terrorism day,” they said.
It is pertinent to mention here that Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq was assasinated by gunmen at his Nigeen residence on 21 May 1990 while his close aide Abdul Ghani Lone was assassinated by gunmen on the same day in 2002 when he was in commemoration rally at Eidgah, the Mirwaiz’s final resting place.
Meanwhile, normal life continued to remain affected in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday for the 22nd consecutive day due to lockdown in the wake of the unrelenting surge in coronavirus cases, officials said.
Police and paramilitary forces kept barricades on roads at many places in Srinagar as well as in other district headquarters of the Valley and the Jammu region to prevent the movement of people. However, essential and emergency services are allowed, the officials added.
Most of the shops, and other business establishments remained shut while public transport was off the roads.
In a statement issued here, a police spokesperson said that 216 persons were arrested, 107 FIRs lodged and also a fine of Rs198190 was realized from 1469 people for violating the guidelines throughout Kashmir valley.
Besides, he said, 8 vehicles were also seized in Kulgam for violating guidelines, restrictions.
In Budgam district, the police spokesperson said, 12 shops were sealed for defying the corona curfew.
“Further, in Khansahib town, Waterhail and Charar-e-Sharief area of Budgam, Police arrested 44 persons and seized 35 vehicles for defying corona curfew,” he added.
