Kupwara: Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered an FIR against 20 people found involved in raising “pro-freedom and provocative slogans” during the funeral of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai on May 6.
A top police official said that an FIR has been lodged against 20 people who were raising “pro-freedom and provocative slogans” while taking the body of Sehrai to Tekkipora-Sogam graveyard for burial at around 4 am on May 6. The video of the same had gone viral on social media sites.
“A case has been registered against 20 people who were found raising pro-Azadi and other provocative slogans, in police station Tekkipora-Sogam (Kupwara district),” the official said, adding that further investigations are on.
Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, was shifted to Government Medical College in Jammu on May 5 after he complained of sever breathing problems in Udhampur jail.
Doctors at the GMC Jammu, according to various news reports, said that Sehrai had developed pneumonia inside the jail.
His family has claimed that Sehrai was ill for the several days and was not being provided proper treatment.
A news report in The Wire quoted a senior official of the Jammu and Kashmir prisons department stating that he had written the Jammu and Kashmir’s government’s home department asking them to shift Sehrai to Jammu jail where he could get better treatment. But the request had not made any headways.
Sehrai was declared dead around noon on May 6 at GMC Jammu. His body was driven to his native village in Tekipora, Lola on the same day and he was buried in a local graveyard at around 4:30 am on May 7. A limited number of people were allowed to participate in the funeral prayers of Sehrai.
