SRINAGAR: Scores of residents in Kakapora, Pulwama, Friday took to roads and protested the alleged harassment of a government employee who they said attempted to end his life on Thursday in order to save himself from the army’s wrath. Later in the day they family members of the victim Shakeel Ahmad Ganaie came down to Srinagar and narrated the ordeal Shakeel had been through because of his blood relation with a militant leader Irshad Ganaie. They alleged that in a bid to save himself from the alleged wrath of these security agencies, shakeel Ahmed Ganaie made an attempt on his life by consuming poisonous substance on Thursday evening.
The family acknowledged that one of Shakeel’s close relatives, Irshad Ganaie resident of Padgampora Awantipora, is an active militant affiliated with the banned armed group Lashkar-e-Toiba. Army and different security agencies picked up Shakeel many times and tortured him mentally and physically. Shakeel is a government employee and has nothing to do with militancy. A few days before he was called by Army at their camp and was thrashed mercilessly for not providing them information about the LeT militant Irshad Ahmed Ganaie, they alleged.
The family members further added that on Thursday evening Shakeel received a phone call from an Army camp and was asked to report there immediately. Sensing the consequences of his reporting at the army camp where he was earlier tortured, Shakeel tried to end his life by consuming poisonous pesticide. We immediately shifted him to Sub-District Hospital Kakapora where from he was rushed to SKIMS Srinagar, the family members said.
Reports said that as the news about his attempted suicide spread, people in Kakapora took to roads and staged a protest against the security agencies. (CNS)
