Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) chairman and MLA Khansahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin Tuesday demanded that the government should assess the losses caused by torrential rains and hailstorms to the crop in several villages of Khansahib on Tuesday.
Government should immediately send a team of officers who will assess the losses and accordingly compensate the fruit growers and farmers of Parnewa, Wader, Kanshoor, Badarpora, Bugru and other adjoining villages in Khansahib where lot of damage was done to the hailstorm on Tuesday, Hakim Yasin said in a statement issued here.
He said that despite the fact that horticulture is the backbone of rural economy in J&K and more so in Kashmir Valley, the state government has not taken the fruit industry seriously and has not provided any incentives and support system to the fruit growers who are keeping the industry alive by their own efforts.
The MLA Khansahib also said the State being primarily an agrarian economy, the government is duty bound to facilitate the farmers and orchardists in every possible way to boost the economy and protect the interests of the majority of the people associated with it both directly and indirectly.
