SRINAGAR: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Thursday appeared near Municipal (Sher-i-Kashmir) Park in the heart of the city here and led scores of his supporters to march through the city.
A Hurriyat spokesman said Mirwaiz visited the park to “review the arrangements at the Muncipal Park” where Awami Action Committee, Mirwaiz’s party has planned a rally on Friday to commemorate the “Golden Jubilee of Awami Majlis Amal (50 Years of Resistance)”.
Eyewitnesses said the supporters, boarding the Tata Sumo cabs and riding motorcycles, shouted pro-freedom slogans while following a similar atop which Mirwaiz was leading the procession. The supporters led by Mirwaiz toured the city roads including Regal Chowk and Maulana Azad Road.
Talking to reporters near Regal Chowk, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that he was expecting that government would not this time stop him from organizing this convention. He said that the state government was not providing the political space to the separatist leaders and was chocking their voice. The ongoing freedom movement could not be suppressed through power and might. We are fighting for a just cause but unfortunately the government is chocking our voice and did not even allow us to organize peaceful seminars and conventions, he said appealing people to make Fridays convention a grand success.
