Srinagar: Army on Saturday rushed its elite Para commandoes to a forest area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district following an encounter with militants who are believed to be on the run.
The special operations group (SOG) of police and army on Saturday morning launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Choor ki Gali, a forest area in Sedow-Hirpora belt of Shopian on the basis of inputs suggesting presence of militants in the woods, officials said. As the combing operation in the forest area was in progress, the officials said militants opened fire upon the search team triggering off an encounter.
“Encounter has started at Choor ki Gali Sedaw area of #Hurpora_Shopian. Police and Army are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Police wrote on its official Twitter handle.
However, a local news agency KNO quoted an unnamed police officer as saying that after brief exchange of fire, militants are believed to have escaped from the spot as there was no fresh exchange of fire. However, the officer said that search operation was still underway in the area.
The official said that helicopter and Para commandos were also pressed into the service but so far no fresh with the militants has been established.
“Given the dense forest area and no mobile connectivity, the operation in the area is very tough and as of now searches are underway,” he added.
