Srinagar, Sept 26: The Directorate of Handloom Department organized a seminar on buyer and seller meet during National Handloom Expo today at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar.
The event was inaugurated by Commissioner/Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Mr. Shantmanu and other Heads of various Departments attended the function.
The Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Mr. Shantmanu, appreciated the role of the Handloom Department in organizing the National Handloom Expo in Kashmir after a gap of decades and while addressing the Artisans, Handloom agencies assured then every support for skill upgradation and Marketing of their products and stressed the Department to formulate a comprehensive programme for holding of such Mega Events within State during the full year and also see the possibilities of organizing such Events outside the State like Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Chandigarh, Agra, Lucknow, Chennai and Kolkata etc
The Director Handloom Development Department, Mr. Mehraj-ud-Din Kenu gave a detailed presentation on the subject and made the Buyers aware about the Handloom activities and product profile being undertaken in the Handloom sector in the J&K State.
While highlighting the need of organizing such events, the Director stated that National Handloom Expo 2012 was organized in Kashmir Haat Srinagar from 17-09-2012 and will continue till 1st October, 2012 and so far record sale of Rs 2.75 crores have been made by the participant Handloom agencies as well as Cooperatives Societies from different parts of the country.
The Director Handlooms Jammu and Kashmir further told that various steps have been taken to check the menace of duplicate Handloom products sold on Kashmir Brand, which includes introduction of Handloom Mark, Silk Mark for the products produced on Handlooms and further efforts are on to bring Pashmina weaving under G.I. Certification, which definitely help the poor Weavers, Artisans of the State in improving their socio-economic conditions.
The participants who attended the todays function appreciated the facilities provided to them by the State Handloom Department. Director Handicrafts, M.D. SIDCO, Joint Director Handlooms, Deputy Director Projects UNDP and Dr. Sarfaraz from SKUAST also were present in the function.
The Buyers and Sellers held detailed interaction during the function and placed huge orders for the products like woolen tweed, woolen mufflers, raffle cloth, cotton linen, bed covers, bed sheets and pashmina items produced in various Handloom Clusters sanctioned by Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi.
