SONAMARG: Days after residents and the traders of Sonamarag observed complete shutdown and staged protests against armys fencing around hundreds of kanals of prime land in the tourist resorts main market, police Monday said that it does not want repetition of 2008 and the land would be freed Tuesday afternoon.
Deputy Inspector General Central Kashmir Range, Afhadul Mujtaba said that police would remove the barbed wire fencing around the hundreds of kanals of land laid by the armys local transit camp number 254. The land served as truck yard and parking place for hundreds of vehicles arriving at the busy resort daily.
We appeal people to be calm and not to stage protest and shutdown. We assure them that fencing will be removed by Tuesday afternoon. We have already taken up the matter with Army brass and hopefully the truck yard would be again thrown open on Tuesday, he said adding that police does not want repetition of 2008 agitation.
Pertinently army had claimed that it is not a state land but they had over it in 1963 on requisition and that they have now laid fencing around it.
