September – Department of Agriculture, Samba in collaboration with Basmati Export Development Foundation, Meerut (UP) Tuesday organised one day workshop on Good Agricultural Practices For Production of Export Quality Basmati Rice where at more than 150 progressive farmers of district participated.
The programme was inaugurated by District Development Commissioner Mubarak Singh.
Speaking on the occasion he appreciated the efforts taken by the department of agriculture for organising the workshop to encourage farmers to produce export quality basmati. He advised the farmers to take full benefit of the workshop and implement the same in their fields.
Dr Ritesh Sharma, Sr Scientist, Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) gave a brief introduction on BEDF and Basmati Rice with a special emphasis on production of export quality basmati in Jammu Region. Dr Ritesh further informed that Jammu Basmati can be promoted as pesticide free basmati as the farmers of this region uses the least pesticide on their Crop.
Sh Ranjan Sundrasan Executive Director, All India Rice Exporters Association delivered the view of exporters and committed to purchase the Basmati Produce from Jammu directly by the exporters to minimize the gap between the producers and Exporters.
Dr S.S.Jamwal Joint Director of Agriculture (Extension) while addressing the farmers gave detailed information on steps being taken by the Department of Agriculture for revival of Basmati in the belt extending from Akhnoor to Kathua covering R.S.Pura, Bishnah and Samba Area.
Sh A.K Malhotra, Chief Agriculture Officer, Samba gave a detailed note on present status of basmati cultivation in the district and various schemes promoting basmati in the district. Malhotra also presented a draft proposal for promotion of traditional basmati in the district so as to increase the production & productivity of crop thereby improving their socio economic status of the farming community.
