Srinagar: The House Committee, which was appointed to probe into recurrent accidents on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, will again remind the government of recommendations it had made after it conducted an exhaustive study of rugged terrain on the highway, sources on Tuesday said. The government has been sitting on the official action taken report ever since the panel made recommendations to check the deadly accidents.
The panel of legislators headed by MLA Kulgam Yusuf Tarigami had submitted a detailed report about the causes of accidents and the recommendation in 2012 . The report suggests more than 2000 people died during road crashes in 2010 and 2011 alone. as many as already submitted a report, which suggested in to look Hundreds have died in various road mishaps on the 300 Kilometer Srinagar-Jammu highway in past two years
“The report is exhaustive. We have studies even minute things such as the random sale of driving licenses, lack of emergency healthcare along the highway and regulation. We wanted the government to act on the recommendations but it’s a sad state of affairs,” says Yusuf Tarigami , head of the house panel. He is understood to shoot a protest letter to the chief minister on Wednesday.
Digdol, where the ill-fated bus crashed on Tuesday, has for long played a death trap for the commuters traveling through this mountainous and rugged road, the only road link between Kashmir and rest of the world. In May 2012 over 30 persons died in a similar accident. That was little before the report was submitted.”
