CM hopes new Indian Govt will speed up talks with Pak
SRINAGAR: Describing Jammu and Kashmir as a long pending problem, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday maintained that any solution for this problem will necessarily have to satisfy the aspirations of majority of the people here. He emphasized the need to engage Pakistan over Kashmir and hoped that the next government in New Delhi would certainly speed up dialogue with Pakistan.
Omar Abdullah was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion session organized by Kashmir University here, on the topic Discussion between India and Pakistan on Jammu and Kashmir a Historical Perspective in which Ambassador Satinder K. Lamba, presently spearheading back channel dialogue with Pakistan, delivered a key-note address and dwelt in detailed about the contours of a possible solution to the problem.
You cannot give any solution which will be acceptable to each and every citizen of the State. You have to work out a solution which will satisfy the aspirations of the majority of the people, the Chief Minister said adding that though such a solution was difficult to sell yet that was the only way-out in this regard.
Omar Abdullah recalled Sheikh Mohammad Abdullahs stance regarding Kashmir and reiterated his grandfather’s wish that India and Pakistan leave the rigid and stated positions on Jammu and Kashmir and find out a solution which would be addressing the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah further said that he had highlighted the importance of Sheikh Abdullah’s vision about Kashmir’s resolution during his discussion with the then President of Pakistan General Musharraf in 2005.
The Chief Minister said that dialogue process has two sides and the two parties with different positions have to come to a meeting point so that productive progress is achieved. He reiterated the necessity for addressing K-issue politically.
Omar Abdullah said that by the key-note address delivered by Ambassador Lamba on Indo-Pak discussion on Jammu and Kashmir, one gets the broader outline on which the blue print of solution of K-issue could be worked out. However, he re-emphasized the need of addressing the aspirations of the majority of people of Jammu and Kashmir while finding out any political solution to K-issue which he maintained is not any economic problem.
The Chief Minister said that the longevity of dialogue without any logical conclusion takes out all sheen out of it and people start disbelieving this process. He said that the discussion on Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan has been a very long and un-conclusive affair. This has made people apprehensive about the success of this process, he said and called for efforts to make dialogue process productive.
The function was attended by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, various legislators, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Talat Ahmad, faculty members, students and members of the civil society.
