Srinagar: The Centre has advised J&K administration to furnish details of items which require geographical indications registration under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999.
In a communiqué to administrative secretaries, J&K’s Industries & Commerce department has written to the departments to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration for sharing it with the Centre.
“…….it is enjoined upon all the Administrative Secretaries to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration with Industries and Commerce Department, so that the same is shared with the Ministry of commerce and Industry, Government of India,” reads the communiqué.
The GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. These GI signs are used for agricultural products, food stuffs, handicrafts and industrial Products.
As a part of the efforts to protect the local goods known for their qualities and reputation, nine items from Jammu and Kashmir have Geographical Indications registration.
The products that have got GI tag are Kashmiri Pashmina, Kashmiri Sozani Craft, Kani Shawl, Kashmir Paper Machie, Kashmiri Walnut Carving, Khatamband, Kashmiri Hand Knotted Carpet, Kashmir saffron-
