Hassan Mir admits seeking votes for NC was like getting water out of rocks
SRINAGAR: Post poll, the allies of ruling National Conference have come up with revelations that could unsettle NCs power ambitions. While the J&K Congress on Thursday admitted that almost half of NC voters chose to vote for PDP, the newly mollified ally, Ghulam Hassan Mir has claimed to have sensed a strong anti-NC wave sweeping North Kashmir. To get votes for NC was as difficult as it is to squeeze water out of a rock.
Top Congressman Taj Mohiudin discloses that a verticle division has strongly favored the candidate from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh.
Taj Mohiuddin, senior congress leader and minister for health and medical education said: Yes there is a vertical divide in Uri. But it is the National Conference voter share that has got divided into two. 50 per cent of NC voters have exercised their franchise in support of Muzaffar Hussain Beigh because of his person and not because of PDP.
Taj said that there was a severe resentment among National Conference cadres against Sajad Uri son of Mohammad Shafi Uri . This anger, the minister said, has resulted into division among NC voters. Over 33 staunch NC leaders including former MLC Mohammad Aslam, two former block presidents Shafi Malik, Ali Akbar and many prominent people like Khadim Hussain and Mohammad Aslam and their followers have supported Mr. Beigh in these elections. They did not leave NC but openly supported Beigh, Taj revealed.
Asked why the NC workers went against the party , Taj said, They were not happy with Mr. Sajad whom we have seen on the forefront. Since people do not see Shafi Sahib active on the ground, I think that has infuriated NC cadres, Taj opined. ave always stood against NC
Meanwhile, the erstwhile foe of NC, Ghulam Hassan Mir, who was recently persuaded by Farooq Abdullah to support NC in North Kashmir, has portrayed a dismal future for the party in Northern districts. Ghulam Hassan Mir , who runs his own party , Thursday said it was difficult for him to transfer his votes in NCs favor.
It was as difficult for me to transfer the votes in NCs favor as it is to get water from rocks, Mir said over phone. He added that during the past decade his supporters have always stood against the National Conference and that to make them to cast their vote for NC wasnt a cake walk for him.
Let me tell you that I worked really hard and made repeated pleas to the people to vote for the NC candidate but it is for the peoples to decide ultimately. I am still hopeful that we covered the ground at large, said Mir. He also maintained that it is wrong to state that all his supporters voted against Shareef-u-din Shariq, the coalition candidate for Baramulla constituency. There are a number of DPN supporters who voted for NC-Congress candidate. We have to understand that my people have always stood against NC during the polls in Tangmarg and we could have only appealed people to vote, we cannot hold them by their collar.
Pertinently, Mir ahead of polls had said that he is the part of the coalition government and will always support any candidate of the alliance. I will support Mr Shariq as he is the candidate of Congress-NC alliance. We have no second thoughts to it that we will emerge victorious. Farooq at Baramulla while addressing workers had also sought forgiveness from Mir asking him not to keep any grudge against NC and support the party so that the nation could be saved. Shariq had also stated that the agriculture minister Ghulam Hassan Mir was working hard to transfer his votes in NCs favor. He had stated that Mir has been holding rallies in his constituency from the last so many days and trying to make NC win possible in North Kashmir.
