Srinagar – After the former Jammu and Kashmir governor, SK Sinha said 50 percent of policemen in Jammu and Kashmir were militant sympathisers, the Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the largest politico-religious groups in the state, claimed that the state police was ‘acting under political influence’.
Expressing ‘serious concern’ over ‘the arrest of youth at random from various parts of the valley’ for taking part in the recent peaceful protests held world over against the blasphemous American film, the Jamaat spokesman lashed out at the police saying: “Everybody has a fundamental right to protest peacefully against any action causing hurt to his faith or creed and using force against such a person in order to silence him is a gross violation of this cherished democratic right.
The police is meant for providing protection to such a person for enabling him to freely express his inner feelings without any fear.”
“But the role of the local police seems to be reverse and quite against the purpose of this very institution. The role of the police under the influence of political interests has become partial and against the interests of general public,” he said.
Jamaat while stressing upon the police to be ‘people-friendly’, demands an ‘unconditional release of all political leaders and workers and those apprehended recently during and after anti-Islam film protests’.
