Srinagar: A soldier, who was injured along with another colleague in an encounter with militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district last week, succumbed to his injuries at the army hospital here on Monday.
The soldier identified as Anil Kumar Tomar of army’s 44 RR died at the army’s 92-Base hospital here on Monday after battling with life for two days, reports said. Tomar along with another soldier was injured after coming under fire of militants in Kanigam village of Shopian on Saturday last.
With his death, the toll in the encounter reached three.
Earlier, two Al-Badr militants Owais Farooq of Pampore and Asif Lone of Shopian were killed in the fierce 19-hour-long gunfight with state forces in Shopian during which the authorities had also snapped mobile internet services.
Lone, according to police, was besides other activities, also involved in an attack on the army’s naka party at Trenz Shopian and pasting threatening posters in Zainapora asking people to stay away from recently concluded DDC elections.
The encounter had raged on Friday afternoon after a joint team of state forces launched a cordon and search operation in Kanigam following a specific input regarding the presence of militants.
LeT Militant Held In Jammu: Police
A suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was arrested here and two grenades were recovered from him, a top police officer said on Monday.
Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Lar-Mahore area of Reasi district, was found roaming suspiciously on the national highway bypass near Bagh-e-Bahu in Jammu at around 7.30 pm Sunday and tried to flee on seeing police personnel but was chased and apprehended, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Mukesh Singh said.
He said two hand grenades were recovered from the bag which was found in the possession of Ashraf, who was presently living in Peerbagh Colony in Sunjawan area of the city.
The arrested person is linked to the proscribed militant organization LeT and was tasked by the handlers from across the border to carry out grenade blasts in the city (Jammu), the IGP said.
He said the handler across was in contact with more militant operatives, the search for whom was in progress. (with PTI inputs)
