Mirwaiz to Geelani: Shun ‘Holier Than Thou’ Stance

‘Don’t Take Us For Granted; You’re  Pushing Us To Wall’

SRINAGAR: Asking Syed Ali Geelani to shun his ‘Holier than Thou’ stance, moderate leader of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Saturday hit out at Hurriyat (G) leader saying that Geelani was trying to exhibit an attitude of superior virtue and thinks he is the god father of this freedom movement which is “utterly incorrect”.

“It is the movement of people. People have sacrificed their precious lives for this movement and Geelani has no copy right over Kashmir movement. Who the hell is he?” Mirwaiz said in an unusually strong tone. 

“He (Geelani) wants to see himself as the sole proprietor of this movement. I warn him not to issue baseless and fabricated statements which utterly prove harmful for the ongoing movement,” Mirwaiz told a news conference at his Nageen residence.

Geelani, in an indirect reference to Mirwaiz, had told a press conference on Friday that some people have been approaching pro-freedom group to garner support for BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and that has prompted them to issue favourable statements in favour of BJP.

Taking strong note of these allegations Mirwaiz termed them as fabricated and baseless and said that his (Geelani’s) statement has given an indication that somebody is going to die. I ask people to be vigilant. Whom Geelani wants to kill now and who is the next target. So many Hurriyat leaders died because of his baseless and worthless utterances in the past”, Mirwaiz said and added: “ Who is he to criticize us when he himself has contested elections for 12 times”.

Mirwaiz said: “Many times I, my party and people have been hurt by Geelani’s  remarks which often created suspicion in the minds of people  but we resisted responding in view of the integrity and unity of the movement. But there is a limit to tolerance,” the Hurriyat M chairman maintained.

Mirwaiz while launching a scathing attack on octogenarian leader said that Geelani was misleading people of Kashmir through his baseless statements since 1990 and is now again trying to create confusion and pushing Kashmir into a civil war like situation. “He is no godfather of this movement. I am telling him and his ‘cottiers’ to desist from attacking us and not try to be ‘Holier than Thou’. He is trying to create vicious environment in Kashmir and mislead people,” Mirwaiz alleged.

Mirwaiz made it clear there is no secret deal being struck on Kashmir. “There is nothing to hide. Whenever we talked to some one, we made that public and yes, we talked to different people, including the civil society of India and our stand is clear that Kashmir issue could be resolved either by implementing UN resolutions or through tripartite talks,” he said adding that Geelani thinks that only he is right while rest are wrong.

Geelani said Mirwaiz said that he (Geelani), his ‘coteries and few self-styled columnists’ were always spewing venom and misleading people. 

Addressing to Geelani directly, Mirwaiz said that, “don’t take us for granted. You are pushing us to wall. Do you think you (Geelani) have copyright of this movement? Let me make it clear, you have no copy right,” he said adding that he (Mirwaiz) is leader by birth and his predecessors have laid their lives for the Kashmir movement.

The allegations of Geelani need to be substantiated by him with proof of when, where and with whom this meeting took place, Mirwaiz demanded.

“If he fails to do so and if he has any moral integrity he needs to apologize for these fabrications not to us but the nation which he is trying to mislead and among whom he is trying to create mistrust,” Mirwaiz said.

Rejecting the claims made by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz said that he or his group never talked to anyone. “Why we will support Modi when we are not in electoral fray. Our group has legacy of faith, trust and conviction. Let me tell you that no dialogue is underway on Kashmir issue. When there is no dialogue then there is no question of making any secret deal. I don’t want to be personal. I want to say many things and if I open Pandora Box of past that will take shape of a big book,” Mirwaiz said.

Visibly disappointed and angry Mirwaiz did not take any questions from the journalists present there. He was flanked by Executive Council members Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Aga Syed Hassan and Bilal Gani Lone.
