SRINAGAR: At least seven panchayat members in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have resigned following the killing of a colleague by unknown gunmen on Thursday evening.
On Thursday, unidentified gunmen shot dead Mohammad Amin Pandith, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) village headman, in Gulzarpora village in Auentpore.
Official sources said headman Ghulam Nabi Dar of Palpora, Mohammad Auob Mir of Zahid Bagh, Watchi and deputy heads Shahzada Begium, Farooq Ahmad Mir, both from Rakhi Litter, Hameeda Bano, Mohammad Ramzan Reshi and Mohammad Ayoub Mir hailing from of Zahid Bagh made announcement at the local Mosques after congregational prayers were offered Friday last.
The village members, all of whom were associated with the Peoples Democratic Party, had also put posters in their respective areas in announcing their resignation. The posters by the members also announced disassociation from pro-India parties.
In past, hundreds of elected village heads have announced their resignations after being attacked or witnessing attacks on the members by suspected militants.
