Srinagar – With a dozen more panchayat leaders announcing their resignation in North Kashmir after the killing of a colleague yesterday, the chief minister on Monday hinted at providing them security and said that he would take the issue up in next meeting of the Unified Command Headquarters (UHQ).
Though around 500 panchayat men have quit so far across Kashmir after attacks and poster threats, the deputy commissioner for Baramulla said that resignations through the media had no validity.
Taking strong note of the killing of deputy sarpanch Muhammad Shafi Teli in Pattan on Sunday night, the chief minister said that the security of panchayat members would be discussed in the forthcoming meeting of the Unified Command so that their protection is ensured.
The chief minister asserted that the panchayats were functioning without interruptions.
Condemning Telis killing, Abdullah said that the act was cowardly and against the interests of the masses.
The coalition government is committed to create strong and effective panchayat institutions in the state, and their members will be equipped with all such security arrangements that will ensure their safe and peaceful functioning, he said, expressing sympathy with Telis kin.
At least four panchayat members have been killed in Kashmir in the past three months.
