Srinagar – Eight persons were killed, and 11 others, four of them women, injured on Monday when an overloaded Sumo taxi fell into a deep ravine in the frontier area of Karnah, reports said.
The accident occurred 20 km from the Tandhar town, killing six passengers on the spot, they said.
Two others breathed their last at different hospitals.
The police said that the mishap occurred due to overloading as the vehicle was carrying 19 occupants.
Those killed have been identified as Muhammad Arif, Ameeruddin (driver), Maqsood Ahmad, Nadir Sheikh, Rafaqat Ahmad, Abdul Rasheed Gorsi, and Altaf Hussain Shah.
The injured were shifted to hospitals in Srinagar.
Police and army had rushed for rescue operations immediately on learning of the crash, retrieving the dead from the ravine and evacuating the wounded to hospitals.
The governor and the chief minister have expressed deep grief and shock at the loss of life in the accident, and conveyed condolence and sympathy to the bereaved families. (Observer News Service)
