Srinagar – The Kashmir University is being turned into an impregnable fortress for the President of India who arrives on Thursday for its annual convocation.
The police is engaged in foolproof security arrangements, with the varsity having been virtually taken over by security agencies for Pranab Mukherjee’s two-day stay, with close monitoring of the staff and students community.
Top brass held a crucial meeting at the police headquarters to finalise arrangements for the dignitarys security, and put all agencies concerned on alert.
According to reports, sharpshooters will be deployed at vantage points within and outside the campus, while boat-patrols have been put into action in the adjoining Dal and Nigeen lakes.
Personnel deployed for presidential security have been issued special coded identity cards to avert infiltration and impersonation.
The security drill has become particularly stringent in view of the protest strike called by Syed Ali Shah Geelani on the presidents visit, and the Black Week announced by the banned Kashmir University Students Union.
It said that it would hoist black flags in the campus as a mark of protest and asked students to wear black armbands to the convocation.
According to the union, varsity hostels had been evacuated three days in advance, putting resident scholars to great difficulty.
It alleged that the university had been turned into a military camp.
The convocation is supposed to be a purely academic affair, but it has been turned into a political event, the union said.
