Srinagar – The police came in for a sharp rap form a city court on misleading it over the date of arresting Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Aasiya Andrabi and her seven associates.
Andrabi was arrested on Friday during protests against an anti-Islam film, but the police documents produced in court show that she and her associates were picked up on Sunday.
Taking strong exception to the illegality, the sub-registrar here, before whom the case came up today, asked the police to tender an explanation, but remanded the DeM chief and others to three more days in jail.
Aasiya and her colleagues were represented by an impressive array of high-profile lawyers, including former Bar Association president Nazir Ahmad Ronga, general secretary Muhammad Ashraf Bhat, Basheer Siddiqui, Mir Urfi and Shafaqat Hussain Mir.
Putting the police to acute discomfit, Shafaqat Hussian Mir said that it had recorded September 23 as the date of Andrabis arrest, while in fact, she had been picked up on September 21.
The lawyer produced documents proving that he had met her in custody on September 22 on the orders of the chief judicial magistrate.
If she was arrested on September 23, whom did I meet a day earlier, advocate Mir asked the court.
He argued that the incorrect date of arrest on the police FIR automatically annulled its unlawful activities charges against Andrabi. (Observer News Service)
